Dr. Eddie Glaude, Jr.

Monday, October 2 | 10:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Dr. Eddie Glaude, Jr., will present “What’s Your DEI Moonshot?” Bringing an outsider’s view and a fresh take to conversations on diversity, equity and inclusion, Dr. Glaude challenges organizations to go beyond just stating their DEI vision to authentically living its values. Key to this is understanding how the value gap (the belief that some people matter more than others) evidences itself in the corporate world and how it is counterintuitive to an innovative organizational culture that attracts and retains top talent. Viewing DEI through an ethical and highly pragmatic lens, Dr. Glaude urges organizations to set bold goals and shift their approaches to create an environment that truly leverages talent and maximizes it at all levels – from junior employees to the C-Suite.

About Dr. Glaude: One of the nation’s most prominent scholars, Dr. Glaude is an author, political commentator, public intellectual and passionate educator who examines the complex dynamics of the American experience. His writings, including Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul; In a Shade of Blue: Pragmatism and the Politics of Black America; and his most recent, The New York Times bestseller, Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own, takes a wide look at Black communities, the difficulties of race in the United States and the challenges we face as a democracy.

Higher Ed Panel Discussion – Recruitment and Retention

Tuesday, October 3 | 2:30-3:45 p.m.

Higher education continues to face a recruitment and retention crisis. Frequent, unplanned turnover and positions that remain vacant for extended periods of time disrupt or cripple essential operations and services, impact the culture, and add considerable cost to the organization. To successfully address these challenges, HR leaders must develop and sustain partnerships across campus, including leaders in information technology, student services and facilities. During this panel discussion, leaders from the associations that represent our colleagues in these areas of campus will share recruitment and retention challenges, successes and opportunities for stronger partnerships with HR.

Panelists are Kevin Kruger, president and CEO, NASPA — Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education; Lander Medlin, president and CEO, APPA — Leadership in Education Facilities; and John O’Brien, president and CEO, EDUCAUSE — Higher Education Information Technology Leaders. Jami Painter, senior associate vice president and chief HR officer, University of Illinois System, will facilitate the discussion.
