As the higher education landscape continues to shift, it has never been more important for leaders to adopt new strategies to meet current and future challenges. This workshop offers chief HR officers (CHROs) the opportunity to interact with thought-provoking speakers and one another. This session will challenge your assumptions, help you build upon your network of colleagues, and give you practical takeaways to implement immediately on campus. Come prepared to interact with thought-provoking speakers and facilitators and connect and engage with other CHROs from across the country.

Topics for the CHRO Summit include:

Top Challenges for HR

The Summit will open with a discussion of the biggest challenges for HR teams and for us as CHROs, both currently and in the near future. We’ll explore what we’ve learned during the last several years, specifically what we and our HR colleagues are doing to address the current and emerging recruitment and retention challenges.

Facilitated by Jeff Herring, CUPA-HR Past Chair and Chief HR Officer, University of Utah

A Framework for Advancing Anti-Racism Strategy on Campus and Strengthening the CHRO-Chief Diversity Officer Relationship and Partnering for Success

In the wake of events that have made inequities based on race more evident across the U.S. and globally, organizations, including institutions of higher education, have committed to do more than issue statements denouncing unjust treatments. These commitments include addressing structural barriers to achieving racial equity and leaders holding themselves accountable for the change. To advance these strategies at institutions, NADOHE created “A Framework for Advancing AntiRacism Strategy on Campus,” addressing 10 priority areas where strategies would significantly improve conditions for Black, Brown and Indigenous students, faculty and staff. We’ll explore the framework and examine the relationship between CHROs and chief diversity officers and ways to partner for success.

Paulette Granberry Russell, J.D., Senior Advisor to the President for Diversity (Emerita), Michigan State University, and Board President for the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE); Clyde Pickett, Ph.D., Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, University of Pittsburgh, and Second Vice President, NADOHE

Washington Update: Higher Ed HR and Workforce Challenges and Opportunities

This session will provide insight into the legislative and regulatory landscape. Specifically, we’ll explore proposed changes for Title IX, anticipated changes with the FLSA, and recent and future Supreme Court decisions that impact the work of higher ed HR. Josh will highlight the challenges and opportunities and engage us in conversations about the impacts on our campuses.

Josh Ulman, Chief Government Relations Officer, CUPA-HR

Finding or Reconnecting to Our Meaning and Purpose

As higher ed CHROs, we spend our days focused on the needs of our employees and our institutions. This typically means that we do not dedicate enough time to focus on the ways that our work is fulfilling personally and professionally. Adapted from an activity that Jennifer Moss recommends in her book, The Burnout Epidemic, we will ask you to engage with your colleagues to focus on ourselves as leaders. We’ll discuss what features of our work give it meaning, how to push through feelings of demotivation, and what we love about being a leader. We’ll also focus on our work to inspire and help our colleagues find meaning in their work, such as how we choose to inspire purpose in our teams and how we can help staff feel about the meaning of their work.

Facilitated by Jami Painter, CUPA-HR Chair-Elect and Associate Vice President and Chief HR Officer, University of Illinois System
