Current and Future Challenges and Priorities

The Summit will open with a discussion of the priorities and challenges our campuses and HR teams are facing now and into the future.

Generative AI

The University of Michigan was the first higher education institution to develop and offer custom generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) services to its entire community at scale. In this session, leaders from UM’s Information & Technology Services and HR will highlight their innovative approach to the rapidly evolving GenAI landscape and showcase how UM is approaching GenAI as a force of positive disruption. They will share how the GenAI framework was implemented at U-M; highlight successes, opportunities and challenges GenAI presents in an academic environment; and share how they use GenAI for initiatives like policy formation, bias reduction, workforce training and business processes.

Presented by Richard S. Holcomb, Jr., Associate Vice President for Human Resources, and Dr. Ravi Pendse, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer and Professor of Engineering Practice in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, both of University of Michigan

Washington Update: Higher Ed HR and Workforce Challenges and Opportunities

This session will provide insight into the legislative and regulatory landscape. Specifically, we’ll explore recent changes to Title IX and overtime requirements. Josh will highlight the challenges and opportunities and engage us in conversations about the impacts on our campuses.

Lunch and Lightning Rounds: Small-Group Discussions

This is your chance, in a small group of CHROs, to quickly discuss some of the most significant challenges and opportunities for higher education HR leaders. We will identify three to four topics and spend approximately 10 minutes on each. The conversation will be engaging, beneficial and fast-paced.

Facilitated by Jami Painter, CUPA-HR Past Chair and Senior Associate Vice President and Chief HR Officer, University of Illinois System; Mike Rask, Senior Vice President, National Practice Leader, Higher Education, Aon

Congratulations! You’re NOT New to Your CHRO Role, but the Rest (or Most) of the Executive Leadership Team Is! Get Ready to Onboard Everyone and Survive the Transition!

There are many challenges for CHROs as they prepare for, welcome and onboard new presidents, provosts and other cabinet members: financial challenges, workforce challenges including internal politics, and sometimes new leaders who don’t value and understand the importance of the CHRO role and the work of the HR team. This panel discussion is designed for sharing what keeps us up at night as we welcome and establish collaborative working relationships with other new executive leaders. You’ll gain valuable insights and resources to assist you in navigating this journey, and you’ll have the opportunity to engage with a supportive network of CUPA-HR colleagues who are eager to help.

Panelists: Lynne Adams, Chief HR Officer and Associate Vice President for Human Resources, University of Maryland Baltimore County; Jazzmine ClarkeGlover, Chief of Staff-Vice President (Chief HR Officer and Chief Diversity Officer), Wagner College
